Multi-User Installation and Setup

NOTE: This feature is only available in the

The Professional Edition of EZChangeLog can support multiple users and a shared data location.

Setup is easy if you follow these simple steps:

1.Create a shared data location. This can be a shared folder on a server or on a workstation (peer-to-peer). Just be sure that the shared data location has both READ and WRITE permissions for the GROUP or individuals that need to access it.

2.Use UNC (Universal Naming Convention) or create a mapped drive to set the location of the shared data.

3.Install the EZChangeLog program ON EACH WORKSTATION using the SetupEZChangeLog.exe installer.

4.Go into the Program Settings screen and set the Data Path to the shared data location.

Peer-to-Peer Network Example ( Windows XP )

Part 1 - creating a shared folder

1. Create the shared folder on the machine that will host the data.

2. In the parent directory where you see the newly created folder, select it and right-click on it.

3. Click the Sharing and Security menu option.

4. On the Network Sharing and Security tab check the box to share the folder on the network and also the one to allow network users to change your files. Enter a share name (such as ECLData
), then click Apply.

5. In the parent folder you should now see a change to the folder icon that indicates that it is shared.

Part 2 - configuring the program to use the shared folder

Host Computer

On the host computer of the peer-to-peer network (the one where the data will reside) all you need to do is point the data location to the shared folder as shown below. Note that we are using the name of the folder - not the name of the share. These can be the same as in our example, but pay attention to this detail.

Other Computers

On the other computer that will access the data you can use the UNC name to connect to the data.

Note: The UNC name is in a format like this: \\server\share

On our test network, the host machine for the data has a name of Owner. This means that the UNC name to access this shared folder will be \\Owner\ECLData.

To configure EZChangeLog to use the shared data from the other computer with the UNC name the screen will look similar to this:

NOTE: The "User Settings Path" should NOT be set to the shared data location. By default when you install the program and run it for the first time it will default to an EZChangeLog folder in the user's My Documents folder.

Unless you have a good reason to change it - leave it alone.

If you do change it, it needs to point to a folder that is unique to each user.

After your settings are entered correctly, click Save and then exit/restart EZChangeLog.

Server Based Shared Data Locations

The wide number of server variations make it impractical to describe them here. Also most server setups require an IT professional to configure them. Here are some general guidelines.

1. Create the shared folder on the server.

2. Create a GROUP on the server and give the GROUP full READ and WRITE permissions to the shared folder.

3. Make users a member of the GROUP (this in turn gives them READ/WRITE access to the shared folder).

4. Use UNC naming or MAPPED DRIVES (as you prefer) to access the shared folder on the server.

Follow the steps for Other Computers above to configure EZChangeLog to use the shared folder.
